Just as Tolkien's work would not have made many people millions of dollars if it had been written like that, your characters will be similarly ignored if played in that fashion. Avendar is a story in which you write your own role, and you'll never get movie contracts with a flat, poorly played, character.
How can you be known in the ranks of the stars of Avendar?
WELL.
Once you have created your fab background, and made your character (of course, you do it in that order, like a good little boy or girl), you are ready to begin your advancement into the RP elite.
One of the very basic skills of role-playing is the proper use of language. This covers many things, such as spelling, grammar, and staying in context.
Spelling is quite essential in making yourself understood. It can severely disrupt the mood of the encounter if one has to sit back and puzzle out your statement, or wonder if you keep failing your language check. I usually keep a window open with a spell-checker (such as Word or m-w.com) but that isn't always needed. Just give what you say some consideration. And remember: l33t is not a language in Avendar.
Grammar is what makes your carefully chosen words into comprehensible sentences. Commas are your friends, and exclamation marks are only a passing acquaintance that you suspect may be making nasty comments about you behind your back.
Above all, context is what makes you believable. Remember where you are, and what does and does not exist. Avoid slang and colloquialisms. While it may be very appropriate to say "Kzroth hit me like a freight train!", trains don't exist in Avendar. Be careful.
While interacting with other people, frequently one would use actions (you can get a list of them by typing SOCIALS, and I recommend testing them in *private*, to see what they do). Sometimes, though, nothing really seems to fit. Perhaps you want to grin, but not broadly as the default "grin" action would have you do, but maybe toothily. Fret not, it was for this situation that EMOTE was invented. Emote will make a custom action, placing your name at the front.
For example:
emote grins toothily.
.. would display..
<yourname> grins toothily.
For me, it would display..
Rystaia grins toothily.
